Tranny craps out! (almost) on 98 S10 Blazer
Cruising down the interstate at75mph and all of a sudden the engine starts racing, but the car is slowing down!!! Quickly, find out that I can maintain 40 mph, but tach is showing about 3000 rpms.
Pull off the interstate and check the trans fluid level, looks OK. Color seems OK, too. Get back out on a secondary highway and it feels like I don't have a 3rd or 4th gear. It shifts fine from 1st to 2nd, but nothing after that.... Reverse? It seems to work just fine.
I was on a trip and drove about 300 miles yesterday with no problems. On return today had covered about 200 miles whenit broke. I was able to limp the last 70 miles home at 35 mph.
I noticed that when coasting down a hill the tach would go to idle rpms. I other words, if this had a lock-up originally, it doesn't any more.
This is a 98 Chevy S10 Blazer with about 132k on the odometer. Had the transmission serviced about 18 monthsago and shop didn't say anything about debris in the pan or other problems.
1. Any ideas what broke?
2. Going rate for a rebuild?

Well, $1300 later, I'm back on the road.
It seems the shop that serviced the tranny about 18 months ago added something that caused the seals, o-rings, etc... to disintegrate, which necessitated a tear down and rebuild.
The transmission shop owner said that he had never seen anything like before.....
