Tranny Service
I plan to change my tranny fluid today. I've never changed tranny fluid in a Blazer before. I was wondering how much fluid it holds..the type or fluid..and the best way to drain ALL of the fluid my tranny. I bought it used and it has 105000 mi. on it now. The fluid is in terrible shape...a dark purple to be exact. But anyways...what would be the steps and the specs. of this job?
Don't bother, add a quart of Lucas tranny treatment and save your hundreds.
Any color other then Red is not good, unless it is full of synthetic fluid.
Let me elaborate some more.
If your fluid is dark in color and has metal flakes in it, changing the fluid will only expediate its final death. Changing the fluid will never fix a tranny. tranny fluid is full of detergents, adding new fluid will only clean off the debris that is keeping a wasted tranny alive. Changing the tranny filter also does nothing. The only thing for the filter to filter is tranny parts. If the filter is plugging up with tranny parts replacing the fitler wont fix it, the new fluid will only expediate its death. Right now the debris is sealing up leaks in the tranny and thus it works fine. New fluid will remove that debris.
As for your other questions.
4-5 quarts by dropping the tranny pan.
total system capacity is 11-12 quarts and the only way to replace all of it is via a tranny flush, which costs roughlt $80-$100. Refer to the above info.
NOW, lets say your tranny is fine and the fluid color is due to some synthetic fluid. tough call. What does the fluid smell like? Burnt, dont bother. No odor, then you could drop the pan, install a drain plug, and swap the filter for ****s and giggles (mostly becuase its like $15 for the kit), you need the new tranny pan gasket. Never use RTV to seal the gasket to the pan or tranny case. Never use a rag to clean the tranny valve body. It only takes a piece of grit the size of a grain of salt to stick a valve. then you have to drop the valve body to fix it.
Synthetic fluid is better then regular tranny fluid, more lubrication properties.
