Trans axle module.

Transfer Case Module question
Ok, new to the forum and here's the first post
Service 4WD light came on last year and felt like it was driving in the mud. Then started to sound like it had mudders for tires. My wife's, co-worker's husband is a Master Tech and said he'd take a look at it.
He said the trans axle computer died. Went to the Chevy dealer down the street and...... $500 bucks!! The wonderfull 4 button, NP8 box. In the words of comedian Gabriel Iglesias, "AWW HELL NO!!!"
Local yards don't have one and they say those fly as soon as they come in. So, disconnected it to turn off the light.
My question is, with it feeling like it's pushing through the mud, is the trans axle engaged?? I think it happened in the winter not sure since the wife waits till I drive the vehicle to tell me something is possibly wrong.
Also, the muddder sound. Her dad and uncle replaced the front hubs several months before the light issue. They put the top line NAPA hubs on. It sounds like a bearing w/out grease. Shook down the front and no looseness. Could this be the trans axle if it were possibly engaged?? I've kept fluid in it to make sure it doesn't burn up. Haven't checked the rear axle yet to see if it's leaking and could be low. The sound is all over but feels like the right front. Wife says she feels and hears it a lot more when I am driving.

Do u mean "transfer case"? Because as far as I know transaxle is only found on front wheel drive cars. If u can't find the computer for the transfer case in a junk yard try ebay, I have seen it there for about $150

*UPDATE* Ok, found transfer case module at a yard. Put it in and it drives a lot better now but, it won't shift when you push the buttons. The switch isn't lighting up either. Could that have gone bad?? Also have heard something about an encoder?
