Default Trans leak

2001 GMC Jimmy SLS 2WD 5spd

I noticed today I was missing little over half a quart of trans fluid today. Ive been having a problem that something smells like its burning according to my passenger since I cant smell anything. My oil level has been good but my trans level was down and I changed it out about a month ago. The whole trans is covered from top to bottom on the front of the trans but nothing on the rear. Also getting occasional smoke from under the hood. Any clue what the leak could be? Did the 2WD SLS Jimmy have trans cooler lines that mightve cracked on mine above the trans/exhaust? It has a tow hitch on the bumper from factory so maybe it has the towing package with the trans cooler lines even as a 2WD? Trying to find out for 100% certain what it is before taking the trans off since I do not really have any downtime or another vehicle to daily so I cant just take it off to diagnose I will only take it off if I know its for a fact something inside but id assume its something outside since its covered even on the top of the trans. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Might be able to help you narrow down the leak. The unit is an NV1500 and uses a Synchromesh fluid and you stated you just changed the fluid. Correct fluid used? Was the fluid change part of regular maintenance or because you noticed a problem? The wrong fluid will make it spit fluid out or the transmission is overheated from something inside failing.

Also no cooler lines on that unit.

Wait its a Nv1500? Not a nv3500? I thought the Nv1500 was for the 2.2l and the nv3500 was for the 4.3l? I'll have to check the bottle tomorrow! It was some yellow penzoil bottle from advance auto. At this point I'm ready to just take the trans off and just do whatever trans work is needed and rear main seal for good measure. But maybe I'll get lucky and not have to? I'll try to get back to you tomorrow morning after checking the fluid I used.

I misspoke on the unit ID. You are correct that it is the NV 3500, totally missed engine size. Most 2wd units that are in my area are the 2.2l used for utility companies. Same still applies on leaks but could also be the front seal or front bearing retainer that is known to leak. Would probably be a good idea to pull it and check to see if clutch is contaminated with fluid. Good luck
