Default transfer case 98 blazer

I have a 98 blazer that started making a grinding noising as i was driving one day, after having it towed to my budies garage he told me it neded a new cv joint and a transfer case. I replaced the cv joint , but I wanted to know if i could disconect the transfer case or remove it completely until i get the money to replace it , while driving the truck with the TC removed?
