The only place you can skip a gasket on s-series is iron head to iron exhaust manifolds. Only then if the manifold isn't cracked or twisted. Everything else needs a gasket. Silicone can work in a pinch but aint right. Only time I would say silicone is better than the gasket is on the intake manifold ends where it seals to the block and heads.
