New member here, hello to all. Hope to get some help with my daughter's little truck on the cheap. I'm experienced with racing engines (street/drag) in my youth, but know little about trannys. Have two kids
in school at the university level, so I need to fix this myself (short of a R&R) to afford the repair. Paid 3,000 three years ago, and have done minor repairs so far, well if you consider a fuel pump minor. Well here are the particulars...
1996 4 door Blazer 4X4 will not shift past second gear. Vortec V6 will break loose rear tire (in any forward gear position) with gas mashed and brakes applied. Fluid level is good, pan has small leak. Will auto & manually downshift to first gear and up to second, but refuses to go beyond that 2nd gear. I hopeful for a simple drop of the pan and change out a seleniod or something. Thanks in advance for your input. BigDave

 

check the speed sensor or the transmission , my 96 blazer did the same thing and i changed it out and it shifted out perfece

 

Check for trouble codes. If you don't have a scanner you can take the truck to an auto parts store that offers free scans. If the transmission is setting a code that can help you narrow down the possibilities of what might be wrong.

 

My son's 96 Blazer LT was not shifting right when we first got it (3 weeeks ago) when in (D) overdrive but shifter find manually 1st, 2nd, D. New filter and fluid and some Lucas Trany treatment took care of all the problems.

 

sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but i also have a 96 blazer the shifts fine 1=2 then when time to shift to third it just freewheels,like its in neutral. the shift solinoids are working because it is trying to shift but the clutch pack is burned up. i am assuming the the speedo works properly. if it does then its rebuild time! sorry to say.
