Transmission Experts Needed!
Hey Members!
My 3-4 clutch pack just went on my 2001 4x4 Blazer, now being a student I don't have access to much cash to get this fixed at the shop.
Heres my options and I would like hear from some people who are more mechanically inclined and maybe have some experience in this area.
1- I know a guy who rebuilds 4l60e for a living, hes offering me a rebuilt one for $800. Now I have to swap my tranny and the parts needed to go with it, transfer case and what not.
2- The same guy will take my tranny and rebuild it for $500
3- I can purchase a used tranny off the internet from a 99 4x4 Blazer for $350, will this tranny be interchangeable and upto what years? Also how high risk is it to have a used tranny.
4- I can take out tranny my self and try to change the 3-4 clutch, doesn't look hard on the videos I watched and threads I read, but I'm still pretty rookie when it comes to Trannys
Some extra info- Blazer has 161 000 miles or 260 000 km. I need this vehicle for transportation, what parts would I have to transfer from old tranny to the one I'm swapping ( Transfer case, torque converter, anything else?) Also is there any other tips veterans would like to give?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

if you would have to go so far with number one and swapping everything over if you can handle the down time probably best to have him rebuild your current trans. price wise is better for you. with a used tranny you are taking a shot on it.. you may get one that will last and work fine, it may only last a couple months and you would be right back where you are now... there is no way to tell the condition of it and if the previous owner took care of it.
the price he is quoting to rebuild is a very fair price. the parts for the 4l60e are relatively cheap and they are not too terrible to rebuild.
so i would say option 2.. just my .02

01 was a single year. At least according to the match up data for the salvage yards. get your trans rebuilt for 500. Although makes you wonder if hes just doing the clutches etc. a 4l60e build here is about 1500-2100 for a true everything redone if needed build.

I'd go with option #2 as well. I've seen those kind of prices where I live too, for a small shop or individual that is. Larger shops like Aamco (who I think are terribly expensive) will charge more.
Ask about the warranty policy.
Lastly, get ready for a battle getting your transmission out. I see you've said you've read up on it but it is not easy. I would not suggest that someone try this as their first foray into DIY car projects. You'll need a good selection of tools, I'd feel bad for you if you don't have air powered impact guns and what not, and you'll need some help getting the transfer case and transmission safely on the ground without dropping them.
I just went through an engine swap on my 96 4x4 and I still have the bruises to show for it.

@wrxin Yea I'm really trying to set time aside from school to tackle this project!!
Another Tranny came up from a 99 Jimmy 4x4 with only 20 000 kms on it and he wants $400...
The real question I guess is if the snub where the torque converter connects is the same?!
Anyone know the answer to that?
Thanks a lot for the responses so far!!
