Red face Transmission fluid and filter

How hard is it to change the trans fluid and filter?
I was told by a friend that the back of the transmission had to be jacked up or something. And also that there is a cross-member of some kind???

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It's a super easy job, start at the front or back of the pan and loosen the bolts in kind of a staggered pattern. You want to tilt the pan to one side to drain the old fluid, if you catch what I'm saying.

Then after the fluid is drained just remove the pan carefully, a good bit of fluid will still be in there. Pull off old filter, push on new one, new pan gasket, install pan, and fill it up with fluid.

Now, I always install a drain plug in the pan when I pull it the first time. It's really easy to do, I get a oil pan drain plug with rubber O-ring and a nut to fit it, find the lowest spot in the pan and drill a hole the same size as the bolt, insert the bolt and nut in the pan, and either epoxy, JB weld, or tack weld the nut inside.
Next time you want to change the fluid & filter in the tranny it's a clean and simple job.

On some of the S10's the crossmember will get in the way of the pan...at the very back (tail) of the transmission. There is a little lip that sticks out and causes some grief for some.

My crossmember is that way....I just loosen the trans mount bolt and then push up on the tail shaft with my hand to give me the little extra room that I need. I thought about cutting the lip off and being done with it but, never have.

Installing a drain plug is a good thing to do...but, they do make a kit to do just that on the trans.

Yep, there is more than one way to skin a cat, but a trip to Lowes, home depot, or local auto parts store and you can have one for about $2.00 AND, you'll have it the same day...
