RE: transmission swap
Old Terminology: 700R4
New Terminology: 4L60
Both refer to the same transmission. GM changed the terminology they used to refer to trannys sometime in the early 90's.... 4L60E, on the other hand, is a whole 'nother animal.

RE: transmission swap
yes and no.
I didn't complete my thought earlier, packers were about to start. priorities.
Any way.
700R4 was first.
then gm made some changes to the valve body and called it a 4L60, same tranny however it has some more sensors and such.
then gm changed to the 4L60E, the 4L60 went from cable controlled to electronicaly controlled. again changes in the valve body.
then in '98 seperated teh bellhousing from the tranny case, its still a 4L60E.
Now with that said.
You can take your clutch packs from your 4L60e and swap them into your 700R4 without issues. I know, I did it. Took the clutch packs out of my '00 and dropped them in my '87 700R4, and that was a 60 degree 700R4 whereas the clutches came from a 90 degree tranny.
Over the years the basic outside dimensions fo the 700R4/4L60/4L60e are roughly the same. The seperated bellhousing units are different in lenght by a 1/2" or less.
So yes, the short answer is yes you cna swap in a 4L60 to replace your 700R4 provided they both came from behind a 4x4 and 4.3L V6 or SBC engine. Look at the drivers side wiring harness. the 4L60 will have a few more wires in it, no big deal, they go to sensors and since your puter isn't looking for those sensors leaving them disconnected is no big deal. Check your wiring diagram (in the manual), no doubt your connector will fit the 4L60 and the wires in teh tranny side will go without a match on the plug end. Just verify your torque converter wiring matches up. Make sure that torque converter is locking up on the highway, tap the brakes and if the rpms climb 200 or so your torque converter was locked up. Without lock up you cna fry your tranny in about 1 houir on a hot summer day on the interstate.
