My daughter's 1999 Blazer has been diagnsed with a VCM problem that prevents proper shifting of the transmission. The $425 price tag for a new one plus $110 for programming is beyond her means. Is a used VCM a viable option for her? Thanks for helping out.

 

You may still have to incur the programming charge to get it to function properly.

Sure is. Many people do it even if they could afford new.

One thing you may consider. Getting a new PCM from a tuner to replace yours. It may be cheaper to get a core program PCM from PCMforLess.com tuned to your liking than to get a used PCM and have it programmed for your truck. The worst case is that you would have to get the CASE relearn performed which would cost you an additional $60 at most dealerships and less if you can find a competent mechanic with the proper tools.

The help here has been great, but I need a bit more. Seems a couple of different EPM part numbers were used on the 1999 4.3l vortec. Assuming I need to get to the old one to verify the part # before ordering. It's raining out, and I don't want to hunt for it. Where is it located?

 

On the PCM itself. It may be visible or it may not be. The PCM is easy enough to remove.
