Default Whining at acceleration ???

Whenever I give her any gas, even in neutral, it will whine!!!
Does anyone have an idea as to the cause of this???
I thought maybe the transmission. The fluid is rust colored with 138,000 mi. it may be the original.
I'm going to do a transmission fluid and filter change this weekend.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem?

Thanks...

a whining even in neutral, sounds to me like one of two things, either a serpentine belt problem/pulley,, or a whine coming from the torque converter, where does it sound like its coming from? I`ve had torque converters whine and then explode.. also power steering pump will whine but normally only when ya try to turn the steering wheel.

Rusty colored tarnny fluid is no good it should be closer to red..I have a feeling if you change out the fluid and filter you`ll prob have more problems with it.. You may wanna have it really looked at and poss get it rebuilt or get another tranny, dont get a used one though down the road its going to be a waste of money to get someone elses headaches that were undetected..get a rebuilt get a warranty!!

Alternators will whine also...might check that out too. An ol' trick that people do is to take a screwdriver, dowel rod or even a mechanics stethoscope and listen to various components.

The stethoscope is pretty self explanatory on the use but, with the screwdriver and dowel rod you place one end on a NON MOVING PART.....ie alternator housing and then put the other end to your ear and listen to see if the sound is that particular component or not. This will help to pin point the problem.

Use caution when doing this, it is very easy to do but, can also be DANGEROUS....so please use caution. If you have long hair put it in a ponytail or something to keep you hair outta the belts.

True on the altenator, does the whining change when ya put the headlights on causing a draw to the charging system or do the headlights dim or flicker??

Thanks for the advice fellas.

Tranny is shifting fine, but know the fluid and filter are way over-due in being changed. Preventative maintenance.

I really like the dowel rod/screwdriver/stethescope idea. Will try this at the first opportunity.
