4X4 Fuse keeps blowing
Hey guys,
I have a 1992 Full Size Blazer and this morning I was out plowing and everything was working fine. On my last pass up the driveway, the 4X4 stopped working. I tried to put it in and out of four wheel with the transfer case lever but it does not engauge. I checked the 25amp fuse and it was blown, i replaced it and the fuse blew again. Does this sound like i just need a new actuator? I just bought this truck , I hope its a simple fix.

RE: 4X4 Fuse keeps blowing
I would say it is likely the actuator. You could disconnect the actuator and then try to engage it to see if the fuse blows. If not, then the actuator is the likely culprit. I probably would not rule out something binding up either. Have you thought about putting in a 30A fuse just for one single test?

Soory about the double post. I tried a 30amp and it got really hot, so i pulled it right out. Do I need any special tools to change the actuator??

Did you try it without the actuator connected? If the fuse blows without the actuator connected, then it is a problem with the wiring grounding out. I have seen this more than once.
You should not need any special tools. If you do not already have the stepper motor version of the actuator, see about getting it. The old magnetic solenoid is prone to problems.
I have a shot stepper motor version on my bench right now that was taken out of my dads old 94 K2500. Reason it is shot is because it took a hit to a rock which cracked the case and allowed moisture to corrode contacts inside. Not a usual failure.

I was thinking about just switching it out to a Posi-Lock system. What do you think?

Update
Replaced the actuator with new updated factory one. Works like a champ! A little on the expensive side but worth it I guess.

RE: Update
Good deal! Should work like a champ for a good long time.
I have that stepper motor on my work bench, but just have not had the time to screw around with it. I just got heat in my garage a few days ago and have been trying to get the exhaust system fit to the truck.
