If it is the factory front diff, it would be a GM Corporate 10-bolt (8.5-in. 1.28 Axle Dia. 28 Spline).

Loaded question. What are your end goals for your truck? Budget?

How large of tires do you expect to run? Given the type of use you expect your truck to endure, 35's would be about the limit of your current axles. You can upgrade the components inside your axle to strengthen the weak points when/if you get to that limit.

Sounds like you need new gears. You likely have 3.08's or 3.42's. My '74 with 3.73's isn't too bad with 33" tires, but I am going to 4.10's before too long.

As far as upgrades for your axle, you can give the folks at Randy's Ring & Pinion (ringpinion.com) a call. You can get stronger axle shafts for your 10-bolt along with gears, lockers, etc. With 35's, I wouldn't recommend locking the front axle.

or go with 3/4 tons out of a k20. that would give you 4:10 or 4:11, can't remember 100% which one of the 2.

that would give you your gears and an upgrade.

they will "bolt" right in
