This might be silly but I can,t find a picture of the inside of the factory air cleaner. does anyone have a picture of the inside?
Mine has a large factory looking air filter or spark arrestor inside glued in. So basically It's going through two filters.
The reason I'm questioning it is because the install looks like some one just used silicone to keep it in place.
Yes i just bought this and its running very rich and wont pass emissions. plus it idles good and runs good until I go for hard acceleration and then it bogs down.
Just starting with basics before I have the carb rebuilt and replace cat converter 86 k5
I have already done the plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
Currently replacing all vacuum hoses too.
Thank you in advance!
The factory manual makes mention that the original air filter also functions as a spark arrestor. Replacement filters should also be made to function in the same manner and not require parts be harvested from old filters. Sounds like someone has thrown their own "belts & suspenders" approach into it.
Does it still have the factory carburetor on it? What have you done to try to get it to run properly? Rochester Q-jets can be decent carbs if properly tuned. They are often misunderstood and as a result people try to apply techniques from other carbs to them which doesn't end well. Don't get me wrong, they definitely have their short comings, but with the problem areas fixed, they can run quite well.
yes factory carb. just basic tune up so far, replacing all vacuum hoses right now. replaced plugs, rotor, cap wires smaller stuff right now to try and narrow it down instead of just throwing cash at it . What you do you think? get rid of it?
Where is the 2nd filter you mentioned? From those pictures, it looks like that is just one filter, the big round one which is the factory style filter. As far as what that gum looking stuff is at the bottom of it, who knows.I would definitely be replacing that filter as it looks to be way past its useful age. Those pictures are quite small though.
all I have ever seen is one. i don't know what the hell that is. if it was factory or what. and someone just left it there, but between that and a normal filter i'm pretty sure i can conclude there was an air restriction
I just looked at RockAuto and there are filters for your application that come with a poly-wrap which is essentially a foam pre-filter on the outside of the paper main filter to collect larger debris, but I'm not sure that is what I'm seeing in your photos.
I think we can all agree that you need a new filter in there though! See where that gets you and let us know!
I would go for a test run with no air cleaner (or no lid) to see if it runs better before tearing out stuff that may be required as part of the emissions system.
Like I said before, that "thing" in there DID come from the factory. I used to see them all the time in the 80s and 90s.
Is that a California truck? Maybe it's just a California thing.
