distributor help please

Default distributor help please

i bought a 79 350 sbc for my 79 k5 but it didn't have a distributor its been a long time since i've installed a distributor my question is please correct me if i'm wrong what is needed to install the distributor and make the engine run is- bring #1 cylinder to tdc ,make sure the timing pointer is lined up at 0 degrees on the balancer mark,install the dizzy making sure the point of the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder ,install, and put clamp on, then with a timing light set the timing to 8 degrees btdc .if this is not correct please correct me or let me know if i'm right my brain is getting older and doesnt remember as much as it used to . thank you

sounds just about right. the way i always find tdc is to put my finger over the hole where the spark plug goes in the #1 cylinder and have someone bump the engine over till it blows your finger off the hole. then put the distributor in pointing at one. it doesnt have to be exactly on 0 to start it, just somewhere close then you can tune it soon as you getting it running

Thats the way I do it. Have you seen the little whistles you can put in the plug hole when finding No. one. Been wanting to make one out of one of those little sqeaky toy whistles. Is the engine out of the truck? Be nice to prime the oil pump while the dist is out. Get a little oil in there if its been sittin for some time. You might need to rotate your oil pump slot to align with dist as your setting it in there. Have fun.

never head of that. something so simple. but would help if your by yourself
