hey all, i traded my caprice for a k5, ive been wanting a k5 for a very long time now i got one got a few probs though im thinking its timing or the carb.. its starts up and idles fine, sounds like its got plenty of power but when i put it in drive its got no power, hardly got up the over pass and gotta floor it to get up to highway speed, id say it takes about 10 secs or more to get from 15 to 60mph. i got it parked at my in laws house for the time being, any help is appreciated. thanks guys

Are the brakes draggin?

so many different things it could be, what engine and how many miles, are the catalytic converters clogged? does it have stock gears and 44 inch tires?
#4
was it sitting for awhile? Change the gas filter see if it helps any..

i need to check the brakes, could be i put it in gear and it doesnt move till i give it some gas. idk how many miles, its a 350 no big tires or anything pretty much all stock.
gonna get a new carb soon should i get a rebuilt qjet or a 500cfm carter, think the carter would get better mpg? im sure the carter is enough for a stock 350. anyone do this and notice any change in mpg?

The carter will work fine, but actual gas mileage you experience will vary depending on your tune and driving habits.
AS for the problem, as has been said there are a million things that could cause these conditions. First thing I do when I buy a used rig is a basic tune up, obviously. Start easy with engine oil, gear oil, coolant, tranny oil, spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, air filter. etc. After that go to the slightly more involved stuff with the carb and timing. Obviously this is engine stuff/drivetrain stuff, but chassis and brakes obviously deserve a going over as well. I doubt body mounts, ball joints, shocks, etc would have anything to do with your issue, but do you really know what kind of shape this is all in?
I'm sure some of this stuff you looked over before buying the thing, and not everything needs to be replaced as long as it is servicable. If nothing else going over this basic stuff will ensure help narrow down any problems you might be having.
One last word of caution, be careful saying this is your last k5. If I had a quarter for every time I swore off chevy trucks while working on one I'd have enough to buy another couple of k5s for parts.
