Default I feel dumb for asking: RE: Torque Converter

Ok, so we got BAB ('84 K5) started up yesterday and I climbed underneath to check things out... and saw something I had never seen while looking underneath.. the torque converter. It is in plain view, spinning up a storm.

I'm a bit of a mechanical newb, but I don't think I've ever seen a TC just out in the open? I thought they spun in a case full of oil or something?

Is this normal?

That's normal. Kinda. There is supposed to be a dust shield that bolts over it. Really won't hurt anything leaving it off. My offroad truck doesn't even have one on it.

Ok, cool. And last night after I got thinking about it, I have a "donor" truck so I could probably just move that shield over to this one.

Thanks!
