please help
this truck is killing me, 87 with a 5.7. Originally had a problem with the truck logging out when trying to drive it, after changing everything from the fuel pump and sending unit to distributor, finally got it with the right fuel control mod in the distributor. now it idles great no bogging down, now when i stop in gear the truck idldies out, e drops down to about 500 and she dies. Will start right back up but next stop same thing. I have through timing advanced 5 degrees. Any help would be great Im out of ideas.

I dont understand that. Are you saying that normal idle timing is 5 deg.
Or did you set base timing at 5 deg?
Base Timing for TBI is 0 as I recall and running {idle} timing should be a lot more than 5.
Does it smell rich, raw gas?

Base timing is set at 5 degrees advanced, the truck seems to run best set there. The exhaust does not smell rich at all. And she idle great until i have the truck in gear then it slowly. Drops from around 900 down to about 500 and dies.

Well, somethings out of wack.
What happens when truck warm idles at 500 and you put it in gear?
If that works okay then... {edit}
make sure your throttle valve cable is adjusted right

{scroll down that page}
If it doesnt stay at 500, then..
Pull and clean your EGR valve.
Pull and clean your IAC.
If it still happens, warm engine, set base timing to 0 {at least for now} When engine warmed, disconnect the IAC and start it. Does it idle at about 400-450 in park? If it drops below 400 and dies set the throttle stop screw to idle at 425. Readjust throttle valve cable.
If it dies before it gets down to 400, dont touch the screw.
I know it's sometimes hard to tell whether it dies THEN low rpm or low rpm makes it die, but if you listen close..
Reconnect IAC, turn wheel, does rpm remain steady at 500.. or increase slightly? Then IAC works right. Same with air if it works.
* note there's hints on that page about TC clutch. I'm guessing here but disconnect connectors to trans and drive it. May not have TC lockup. So then does it stall and die? If so then possible bad/sticky lockup solenoid.

It idle around 650 700 when warm. i can put it in gear and drive fine but when i come to a stop light it drops to 500 and dies. I will try what you said in the am, I've had another person tell me to turn up through idle at the throttle body but i can't seem to find any adjustment screws on it. Thank you for helping Im at my wits end with her.

well it says 5.7l 350ci chevy small block v8 i know these motors very well and that is a very common problem specially when the motor has been rebuilt me and my friends run in to that problem almost every time we try to time one of these motors
