Some OBD2 readers can read the OBD1.5 computer. The plug is the same, but most readers do not have the proper programming to pull the codes from this system. Check with the manufacturer of the scan tool that you are looking at before making the purchase. Most manufacturers have a help hotline that can be called.
I dont really know for 100% sure if my brothers is OBD1.5 tho. from what the dealer is telling us the previous owner got tired of the same issue the OP is having so he yanked the engine and pcm out of 97 jimmy. so in theory, it SHOULD be OBDII. neither one of us will really know for sure until we yank his engine for a 350 swap. we do know that it was an original w code engine, both the one from his sonoma and the one from the jimmy.

Well now that changes things completely. If you have a stock motor and PCM in a '95, you are OBD1.5. Go changing components out and all bets are off. I don't believe it is a simple swap though.

No, I would imagine it wasnt. Apparently the guy knew what he was doing though because if it IS in fact the engine/PCM out of a 97, then it runs perfectly. The reader reads/corrects/erases codes as it should with an OBDII system, but still. We wont find out anything for sure untill the motor is yanked and all that good an happy BS.

On a side note, would there be any major differences in the underhood components that would be effected by the OBDII change over? Maybe we could get to lookin around under his hood and sniff out a rat or something. Regardless its only got 2 payments left and then its gettin parked and prepped

Other than a complete swap to the '97 wiring harness...

I was thumbing through my chilton manual, and it says that 95's with vortec v6 cmfi have OBDII. The pcm is in the same place as 96+ blazers (no underneith the glovebox like odbI), and it has 16 pin connectors like ODBII (not 12 like ODBI). The manual didnt say anything about a 95 not being fully odbII. confusing...

Parts are similar, but to say they are the same is false. I don't know how many times I have to say it to get you to believe me... '95s are neither fully OBD1 nor fully OBD2, they are a mix, hence why most OBD2 scan tools do not work on them. If they were OBD2 as your book says, then we wouldn't have this topic now would we??

Why We don't have pictures about How to recognise obd1 or obd1.5 or even obd2 in Blazer 95. I have this reference:

Pictures are readily available from a number of online sources with a simple search.

Concerning how to differentiate between an OBD1.5 and OBD2 system in a 95, that has been posted in quite a few other threads on this forum.
