Default 1997 chevy blazer 4x4

I have a 1997 chevy blazer 4x4. I was checking the oil pan for a leak. when I noticed an opening in the transmission case. It looks like a perfect cut circle. I can see the gears through this. I'm thinking it's not supposed to be like that. It's not leaking transmission fluid and seems to be shifting fine. Any information about this is greatly appreciated.

Thank you! I kept checking google for openings in the bottom of transmission, all I could find was stuff about damaged transmissions. When I added transmission housing to the search. I was able to find a cover for it on amazon. Thanks again for the response!

I believe it is only an inspection port. I'd get a cover for it. I think mine is a thin stainless steel plate with tabs. You'll want to cover it to keep unwanted dirt etc. from getting in there.
