Default 500.00 for a new Fuel Pump?????!!!!!!

I had to bring the blazer to have some work on it, I asked them to do a fuel diagnostic.

I thought I needed a new fpr but they said it was the fuel pump the pressure was low, they told me 54 LBS when it should be 60 or 62LBS.

So I asked them how much for a A/C Delco fuel pump ONLY.

They quoted me: 500.00 for the pump; 315 to install it; 89.00 to install new fuel filter; 89.00 for a "Fuel System Cleaning".

So the total with taxes and everything else: $1220.14

Wow...I found the whole pump and sending unit assembly on rock auto for 355 bucks (Ac delco, delphi is 313.00).
Filter is 13 bucks (ac delco)
then you can fuel clean it with some seafoam.
You can do the fuel filter and fuel cleaning yourself. Takes 10 min to do the filter.

That's actually not that bad of a price. When my dad had to have the fuel pump done on his old 96 Jimmy it was about that price both times. (He put over 250K miles on it)

What you guys are either forgetting or ignoring is that these mechanics aren't ordering stuff from Rockauto.com or anything like that. They're ordering from the local parts store or stealership, and we all know those prices are more expensive than online.

I do agree though, if you take your time and be careful (don't smoke while doing this job, obviously) you can do all that yourself.

I work at advance auto parts and run the comerical counter back here. Most places mark up their cost on parts to their customers by at least 20%. And depending on how much business they do with us they get x amount of % off the actual part they get from us. So 500 for a fuel pump ac delco or not is crazy. Just my 2 cents.

yes, a mechanic would charge $500 for a fuel pump. My dad recently had his replaced in his 06' Tahoe after it failed, and he paid in upwards of $700.

If you can't do the work yourself, buy the pump and have the mechanic install it.

You might want to check out Amazon. When I had to replace mine I did a very extensive search for AC Delco/Delph pumps and found the best price, with free shipping, was Amazon. Think I paid about $235ish.

Just BE CAREFUL when you buy one online, make sure it IS a ac delco or delphi and not a alternative. THERE IS a difference. delphi and ac is the only way to go.

Also remember this,if you dont do the work yourself then DONT buy anything. They will NOT warrant the parts. So if you buy a pump and they install it and it goes bad a day later you are out of labor costs. I learned my lesson when I went cheap on a airtex pump last year. Never again.
