Default Air Intake 1999 2 door ZR2

This is my first car and I know very little about cars mechanically. I want to get more horsepower and power out of my blazer but I want to be able to do the work myself and I don't want to add any mods that are going to put my engine at a high risk of failure. One of the things I thought was an air intake. From what I know the main performance intakes are cold air and short ram intakes I think I want a short ram intake because I live in the country and from what I read the cold air intake sits way lower to the ground and is likely to get water in it and debris. I want to know if I'm right about the air intake being a good first mod and if I'm right about a short ram being the best for my circumstances. I also want to know if it will make a noticeable difference to make it even worth it and if it does make a difference what can I expect. ( This is also my first time posting on a forum like this so I have no clue if this is how I'm supposed to do it).

Most "Cold" air intakes for this truck are not very effective as most have an open element pulling air for the engine bay which is hotter than the atmosphere. My sons truck had one so bad the intake air temp was about 30 degrees hotter than mine with a factory set up.

Switched his to the factory and his mpg went up and the truck runs better with fewer misfires.
