theres more to it than just welding the seam. Im sure they would use plates and weld them on over the crack too.

^^^ YUP ^^^

You can't just weld the seam and hope that it holds together. You'll need to fully weld on plates on atleast one side.

All the videos I've watched and the books I've read have shown the right way to do it is to weld up the seam and then use a diamond shaped plate or a rectangular plate and weld that over the crack.

yea i definatly would not just mig it and forget about it. i would grind it all down to clean metal and put a plate on each side and weld it, i would rather stick weld myself, but most people just rather use a mig because its easier and usually quicker but stick is not as easy and most people cant stick weld like they can mig

That, and it's a lot easier to weld thicker metals with stick! lol

My stick welds were always better than my fluxcore mig welds...

However, my gas mig welds were always cleaner...

Stick welding is easy, though... my hands naturally have some shake to them, which is just about right for working the puddle, lol.

stick is cake on thick medal. Mig can get rough on real thin sheet steel.

deffinitly reinforce it whoever you have do it have them line it up weld the seam then flap it and plate it both sides for strength that should do the trick
