Default CV axle or whole axle assembly

My cv axle started clunking on the freeway last week. I had it towed to the local Pepboys who after inspection say the CV axle, carrier, and gears need to be replaced. They say the carrier is gouged and needs to be replaced. Can I go the junk yard route with a complete axle assembly, or can I just do the cv axle seals and bearings? 2000 blazer 4wd with a manual transmition. I have only used the 4wd 3 or 4 times about 4 years ago. -Thanks!

x2 on the second opinion, and yes this can be a pick a part type of repair, i would like to know how the technician can tell that the carrier was gouged without opening the front case. also you should have the RARE iron case front diff, so finding a iron replacement will be a challange
