I am a high school student with a 1999 4 door GMC Jimmy, and don't have much money, but I want to work on my Jimmy to make it look better, or perform better. I have a summer job, and will be getting the RC 2.5" lift and 31's, but for the time being, what are some cheap mods that can be done from the local auto parts place or hardware store?

 

Well, i'd be careful with the wording there. You don't want any cheap mods on your truck.

I understand what you mean either way. What are your goals for the truck? I'd say save up your money to do what you really want to do instead of just doing things here or there and changing it down the line.

You could always fix little things that are broken, like interior peices, or paint on small parts like wiper arms, rims, calipers, stuff like that. Theres always something you can do, just think it out so you don't end up re-doing it in the future.

 

Careful with the lift kit, and don't mess with the torsion bars. Concentrate on repairing or maintaining something that will actually make a difference, like installing AC Delco plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and some good quality plug wires, or an injector upgrade if it hasn't already been done. Very few if any mods will gain you anything. Cold air intake systems top the "waste of money" list, followed by the throttle blade mod & throttle body spacer. None of them make a difference on port fuel injected engines. Good mods are expensive, and they can approach the dollar value of the vehicle.

 

You sound kind of young. If It was my choise I would forgo the lift and big tires and concentrate on reliability. A lifted truck that doesnt run is worth less than a stock truck that doesnt run and a lifted truck that is upside down in a ditch because of neglect of an important suspended componant is worth close to nothing.

Thanks guys, I have already addressed the majority of the problems and have been driving it personally for a few months with no issues. It has been in the family for 3 years and we have been dealing with the minor reliability issues along the way. LeWhite, I am young, I am 16 years old. I am aware that I need to stay away from cranking the torsion bars because it just puts more strain on everything. We have left the Jimmy alone for a long time to make sure it was worth putting money into it, and have worked out all of the quirks, runs good, and 4wd works great. It had a new engine put in 70,000 miles ago and so far that has been reliable. The mods I am thinking of right now are mods more focused on small functional things, just things that are cheap to do, that have a small benefit (even aesthetically like the paint that was mentioned). I see no need to do anything to the engine at this point other than the usual maintenance, good oil, spark plugs, etc. Thank you for the responses, I am aware I am young, and am new especially to the Jimmy/Blazer scene, but that is why I am reaching out for ideas because you guys know this stuff way better than I do at this point.
