Default Fuel tank capacity

I have a 97 blazer LT 4door 4x4 which I bought last month. According to the owners manual which came with the truck, the fuel tank has a capacity of 19 gallons. Since I bought it, I've only been putting in $20 (6 gal) at a time when the needle hits the orange stripe. This morning it was down to the E when I went to fill it up. I gave the guy $50 figuring this would give me 15 gallons. Imagine my surprise when it would only take 14.7 gallons. Some thoughts: the vehicle has a salvage title so they may have swapped the tank, or, when the gauge hits E there's still 4 gal. in the tank, or, the owners manual could be wrong. Anyone else have this happen to them?

These trucks always have these problems

Most of the time the sending unit (float) wont read right .

Most people wait to fix this problem when there fuel pump burns up

Giovanni is right about the fuel sending issues. They are awful. You can fill it up and the needle go drastically down to half then slowly go down from there.

But I believe I have the 18 gallon tank since mine is a 4 door compared to your 2 door with a 19 gallon on it. And I feel the same way man about when I go to fill her up. But your exactly right, when it hits e, there is still a good amount of gas in her. I believe it is 4 or 5 gallons left on e.

yeah my 2 door is the same way. I still have about 4 gallons left when its on E. That is the way GM designed it. The reason is because GM use to give you gas if you ran out on the side of the road. A lot of people took advantage of that so they adjusted the fuel gauge so you would still have plenty of gas left when it was on E

Thanks guys. After a little research I found out that my owners manual is wrong. I used the VIN on some sites and the specs say it has an 18 gal tank. I don't like to run it down to E if I can help it. When it gets down that low you're picking up all kinds of crud in the bottom of the tank.
