Need a truck
Hey guys my name is Sean, Im 17 and live on Longisland, NY.
Here are some pictures of my previous cars, so you guys can get to know me.
I had a 1998 Yukon for a month, but when I got it it had major problems. the radiator was cracked, the transmission was blown (couldn't go in reverse,) the interior lights didnt work, the door handle broke off so I had to get out the passenger side. I gave it to my car care teacher and he fixes it up in class with his students.
Then i bought a 2006 Mitsubishi eclipse, I got it for $3000 under kbb value and i love it. But now that the snow is here, and I want to play and go snowboarding, i need a truck. Im looking at 4x4 4door blazers. But I don't want a repeat of my last truck. I want this to last at least 3 years haha
Some one offered me a black blazer, with 132,000 miles and new tires for $2800. How long will this car last? And how much money goes into maintenance a year/month would you say?
If you take out the time to read this, I just want to say thank you in advance

big fan of your yukon there bud. sometimes the deals you get aren't really great but things happen. next time you feel like giving one of those away let me know.
what year blazer is the one youve been offered?. there's some threads out here about common issues with them you might check out before you buy . just gotta use that search button
btw. welcome to the forum

personally, i've never had any major issue with my '98 LT (other than the rad popping tonight in -36* weather), but another member swears @ his-as he calls it-POS '02 Blazer.
sometimes you find a lemon (like your Yukon). it's all a crap shoot when buying a used vehicle.
if it's a friend of yours who offered the vehicle, then hopefully you know the history about it better. has he ever bad mouthed the truck? if so, do you want to take over his complaints?
just a few questions to ask yourself.
personally, i think he asking too much for it. i only paid $2000 (CAN) for my '98 with 158K (98000 miles) on it, 2 years ago. and that was for a truck with every option ordered.
just some info for you to take into consideration.

Does every year have it's own little problems?
And do you have any idea how much it costs you to own one /month or year?
that's a really open question brother.

When i say how much do you think it costs i'm talking purely maintenance for you personally. I just want to take an average
Not gas, mods, or insurance. Just how many times a year/month does something break like, a radiator tube cracks or the transmission goes. If you say "its all different, in the last year nothing has happened", then that only makes me extremely happy, haha and good luck with continuing the nothing streak.
I had an 05 and in the 2 years I owned it I had nothing break. I had a U-joint go bad on me and that's IT.
Personally if I had a choice I'd buy a later model Blazer (like an 03
) because typically some issues will be ironed out. i.e. Fuel spiders going defective, issue was solved by this time.

Routine maintenance is a little more expensive on Blazers than it would be on your Eclipse. They're R/4-WD, so there's more drivetrain to maintain (check your diff fluid levels, gaskets, transfer case fluid levels, gaskets). They're Chevys, so either you'll get one that's solid as a rock (which is likelier) or one that's terrible. My roommate's '00 needs head gaskets with only 175k miles on it, while my '89 is on the OEM engine with 4.11 gearing, and it has almost 230k miles on it. And as far as I know, the only thing that's been done on it is a drivetrain swap to the 4.11 gears. No head gaskets, no major failures. It's a crapshoot.
If the car has been well taken care of it should last quite a long time, My car is 26 years old and still going strong. Granted I did have to replace some of the suspension and steering parts on it but that is probably a given considering the age and they looked like they were original to the car.
it's always a crap shoot when buying used.
take a look @ my Buick (in my sig) still has the original exhaust & cat.
but i did shoot myself in the foot with my statements of no major issues over the last 10 days or so.
my rad blew the driver's tank yesterday, but that's a fairly typical thing. hot coolant hitting the front of the tank, causes the tank wall to become weak over time.
still.......a little more than 12 years after it's build date, with aprox 230K on the original rad? i can't complain about that. but i will complain that it broke on a string of -35* temp days!
oktain is right, try & get a late model '02 (EGR delete) or a '03+ truck. cost you a bit more, but should have more life left in 'er.
oh yeah, that listing is no good. h the guy has pulled the listing.

that's a ridiculous lifespan for a rad. AFAIK I'm still on the stock rad in my T10 with 210k miles on it, but since I've only owned it for a year I can't be certain. my old camry went through 2 rads in the 6 mos I owned it (one because it was broke when I got it, one because I rear-ended some ******* in a tacoma-- hence me getting a taller vehicle)
Like they say, it's a crapshoot on blazers and such. Mines a '97 it's gone through two tranny rebuilds, a master break cylindar, etc. Mine only has just turning 107k miles on it and it's considered a lemon, being a wire in the computer shorted making the whole system go crazy and short overdrive out.. But you know what? It runs perfect and the body is in great shape compared to most
*edit* If you were to see mine looking it up, you might see it listed as a lemon.. but it runs better than a lot of blazers around here newer going for 3 or 4. So it is a real crap shoot
