Shift lever problem

Shift lever problem
I have a sudden failure of my shift lever being able to engage into any driving mode. I can not start the vehicle. The lever has full range free play after the key is turned on, but nothing happens. I will scan the forum for related help, but this is my first call for assistance.
Last night, I finished an 1,800 mile trip from Florida to Minnesota in about 46 hours. After resolving a radiator cap over-heating problem about 130 miles out, the Blazer ran super, hauling a 2200 pound rated aluminum trailer loaded with only a small table saw, 5 gallon gas can, a spare tire, and couple of small tool boxes. Traveled all interstate at 70-75 mph max in drive 3. My transmission fluid level is full, good color and smells clean. Burned about 3/4 quart of oil the whole trip. Left Florida with a 112 heat index and once coolant problem was resolved ran at temp gauge showing just above 210. No evidence of any fluid leaks on the ground over night and general inspection of the engine and under-side looks clean.
Here's the kicker:
I started the Blazer this morning and backed out of the garage and put it in park and set the E brake. I unloaded the vehicle of luggage, etc. There were no signs of any problems at this point. About an hour later my daughter started the Blazer, backed down the drive way, shifted into drive and " it all went to Hell". There she sits on the side of the road, pointed down hill, toward the lake, ready to free-roll once the cinder blocks are kicked away. I see the obvious solution, but you guys always come through with a technical fix. So have at it, PLEASE.
Thanks Blazertonnians.
