The timing looks ok but scanner says 40 at 1000 rmp Is this normal and do I need a different scanner. The live data has been good so far .at idle the timing advance is like 16 or 17. I'm wondering if I need to take out the distributor which was replaced last year, and try to reinstall it to see if I can get it more perfect to top dead center than it already is.

This is an idle

This is at 1000 RPM

What year is it? Moving the distributor will NOT change the timing, only the cam sensor retard. Can you read that on your scanner?

BTW, that timing doesn't look too far off. It shouldn't be anywhere near TDC under normal circumstances.

It is a 2002 Blazer LS. Thank you for the information I had to take the distributor out and replace it I'm wondering if I have the gears aligned perfectly because the OEM distributor split in half on the highway

It would run like a 20 year old rig if you got it off the mark, since its running and your complaint wasnt about poor engine performance you should be fine, you want to adjust Camshaft Sensor Retard. (yes its called that) to be within +/-2 degrees of 0

This is not an HEI System with a vacuum advance or points, Fully electronic spark timing, if you stabbed it in at TDC you're good, you will need to rotate the distributor body itself with the truck running (do not loosen retainer bolt more than absolutely required) and tune the CMPR into range. There are other threads about how to do this exactly and what scanners will be able to view CMPR values.

I'll definitely consider it. Thank you for the knowledge and wisdom and since it's running pretty well I think I'll just leave it alone. Since owning a Blazer of these years I've learned one thing don't mess with too much. I think more things have broken because I touched them then because they wore out. I was looking for this exact information! Thank you again!
