Top Rack....2001 Blazer 2dr..Need info..!!
#1
Hey guys....I recently purchased a 2001 2dr 2wdr that has a rack on top.
I bought it so that I can use it on my weekend trips to the Corpus..the coast. It usually takes me about 2 hrs to get there. I do alot of fishing.
My questions is...I have a Kayak that I want to take with me but I am not sure the rack holds it. It is 12ft long and weights about 85 pounds or so.
I know I am able to load it up there...but I am not sure if the support bars and rack will be able to hold it. I dont have the owners manual to the truck. I have some excellant straps to tie it down...
And thoughts or info to help me out?
Thanks,
Dave ~

Shouldn't be a problem.

On the side of my roof rack, it says it can hold 200lbs so your kayak should be fine.

When I bought my Blazer the roof rack had the pads on it for a kayak...
I'm sure the previous owner hauled one on it, but I haven't tried it yet. Infact, the rack now resides in my shed.

Thanks guys....I really appreciate the info.
I guess I am more worried about the rack getting ripped out of the roof due to the wind pressure of the yak being tied to it and my driving 75 mph....lol.
But I will test it out around town...to see how it handles.

I can't remember exactly where I read this, but I seem to recall that the roof had some kind of extra support built into it where the rack mounts. I'm fairly certain a kayak isn't going to cause you any trouble. Whe I moved up to school I had two very large duffel bags tied to my rack. They probably weighed a good 120-130lbs and are nowhere near as aerodynamic as a kayak haha.

Thanks again guys. I might be worrying about nothing...but I will do a littlemore research on that extra support you are talking about, RED 96'.... I plan to head out there in 2 weeks.....

Came out of high school (3 years ago now) and saw my 110lb GF sitting on the roof rack of my Blazer reading lmao. (Her friend helped her up there without touching the paint... I trained her well
)
It'll definitely hold your kayak, especially if you put it near the side of the rack. The middle may be a little weaker but I wouldn't worry about it.

The only problem I can think of is that kyaks typically get transported upside down right? That would mean there would be a large hole in the bottow of it for the wind to grap that thing and lift up on it I think the bolts would hold but Im not to sure about the crossmembers, they are just plastic after all. If you could find a way to travel with it upright then I think you would be good though.
