No fan follow up
First, let me say say that the latest what have I done as of yesterday was flush my heater core. This was after I put a piece of thin plexi glass covering probably close to 80% of the aluminum radiator. This brought the indicated temperature up from 160 or so to 185-190. But still well below the 210 on the gauge. With no fan. This being only my 2nd Winter with this machine, it had good heat last year, & that was with the gauge on 160 consistently, with fan. So anyway, this winter, even with getting the water temp. up more than last year, the heat was lukewarm on a low 30s night a couple days ago. And I didn't think the blend door was the culprit. So, the flush (plus, easier). The heater core looked fine from a connection point of view, metal looked good & I saw no sediment in the 15% green anti freeze (I know, needs a bit more). Within no time, the water is clear. Flushed it 3x at least. The smaller hose of the 2 came from the water pump & that is the side I flushed from. Probably doesn't make a difference either way. But the hose leading to the intake was larger. The flush made a difference, even though I saw no rust, the heat was back to normal, if not better. My heater core has gurgled since ownership, I've tried to bleed the system by having the front wheels on ramps. The flush helped, but still gurgles, but not as clogged up sounding and, not as often. Taking the fan off made a difference too. At least 1 more mpg but it's too early for accurate figures. The plexi glass will come out in late Spring. Amazing how much better aluminum radiators perform. 2wd '97,4dr, 212k (2nd radiator, orig. wtr. pump). ..... sidenote : I can watch the water temperature gauge climb from cold to roughly 200 indicated before it falls back to 150 as the thermostat opens before it climbs & settles a little higher. I don't know if the thermostat is original but if it's a replacement, I would guess 195, possibly 180.
