what have you gotten done on your blazer today?

the differential works just like a standard open differential until the mechanism senses a large difference in rotational speed between the rear tires, then it engages the limited slip differential. i have never not been able to not make a G80 slip in any of the GM vehicles i've owned, from s-10s to 1 tons.

Nope, not a locker, only a limited slip due to its clutch design. does it lock and unlock the clutches, absolutely, but does not lock the axle shafts together. don't let GMs advertising try to convince you otherwise.
They are horrible things off-road, far more streetable than a locker though

In the drag racing world limited slips weak parts are the clutches. (g80 is weak, went through quite a few) With a locker differential or a spool, the weak parts can be anything from wheel studs to the transmission due to the fact that a locker distributes 100% of the torque to both wheels. With a locker differential the axles are like being welded together.
05BlackJimmy "Am I reading this correctly that a g80 has charateristics of a limited slip but its actually a locking differential?"
I would say the g80 has characteristics of a locker differential but is actually a limited slip. Lockers are open until you lock them together. Limited slips are held together by a viscous clutch all the time. The G80 is what's in between; open for 90% of the time, but a viscous limited slip when needed.
Oh yeah, I put gas in mine today err yesterday I mean.

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to stir it up this bad. I would love to debate it further, but in another thread just for that purpose.
Lewhite, I meant the g80 will always slip at some point... I reread what I posted and...oh my...confused myself. Haha

That is where you are incorrect. The G80 does unlock over a certain speed to improve stability on slippery surfaces for those people who do not know how to drive with a true locker, but a properly functioning G80 does not slip when locked. To say that it is slipping when it has unlocked intentionally is simply false.
But there are already a few threads were we have had this discussion before as a search with a few keywords would show.
