the differential works just like a standard open differential until the mechanism senses a large difference in rotational speed between the rear tires, then it engages the limited slip differential. i have never not been able to not make a G80 slip in any of the GM vehicles i've owned, from s-10s to 1 tons.

Diaita is 100% correct except for saying limited slips are horrible things for off-road, an open gear is horrible for off road. Limited slip.....better than an open and excellent for road use do to increased traction when needed and very quite operation.

In the drag racing world limited slips weak parts are the clutches. (g80 is weak, went through quite a few) With a locker differential or a spool, the weak parts can be anything from wheel studs to the transmission due to the fact that a locker distributes 100% of the torque to both wheels. With a locker differential the axles are like being welded together.

I would say the g80 has characteristics of a locker differential but is actually a limited slip. Lockers are open until you lock them together. Limited slips are held together by a viscous clutch all the time. The G80 is what's in between; open for 90% of the time, but a viscous limited slip when needed.

That is where you are incorrect. The G80 does unlock over a certain speed to improve stability on slippery surfaces for those people who do not know how to drive with a true locker, but a properly functioning G80 does not slip when locked. To say that it is slipping when it has unlocked intentionally is simply false.
