HI All- hoping someone can help me here. I have been thru some of the archives on EGR problems, but found nothing specific to my 88 (full size 5.7L, TBI)
Im getting code 32 (after about 20 mins of driving) which I believe is the EGR. My manual says that there nothing to "fix" onthe EGR and it just gets replaced. However many of the posts I went thru indicate you can clean it to remove the carbon build up on other year models. Is this possible on my 88? If I can clean it, how would you reccomend I go about it?
I have checked and replaced all vaccume lines already. I have take the IAC out and cleaned the build up there as well.
ALso can anyone tell me what the "electronic pad" is that is mounted onthe pass side of the TBI just above the valve cover? The EGR and other sensors? all plug into this. I dont have a pic of it and its not in my manual.
Appreciate any info

Before cleaning the valve, check and see if it works. With the engine running, pull up on the diaphram (use gloves if it's hot), and the engine idle should drop. If that's ok, run the engine from idle to about 2000 rpm the diaphram should move. If it doesn't move, check for vacuum to the valve. If there's vacuum but the valve doesn't move, it's probably dirty.
You can clean your egr valve. Remove the 2 mounting bolts and lift it off. Use a screwdriver to remove the major carbon deposits. You can use a soft faced hammer (like plastic) to clean the pintle. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the loose stuff. DO NOT use degreasers or cleaners as they might ruin the rubber diaphram. Use a wire brush to clean the pintle and mounting surface. Push up on the diaphram to check the sealing area of the pintle and seat. Also by maually pushing up on the diaphram you are checking the pintle for smooth operation. Clean the mounting surface of the valve and the intake manifold and install with a new gasket.
The other thing you were wondering about might be an electronic spark control module. Flat with about 4 wires in a single plug?
