battery meter goes down?

at night when i put my lights on my battery meter goes down, system on or off.... what does that usually mean... alt or battery?

Could be the battery and/or the charging system. You can either one tested for free at AZ.

How do you test the altenator with a voltage meter?

Don't know if you have all of these attachments or if your MM does all of these functions, but here's an article from Fluke:
