Fuel Pump Question
Is there any situation that I should not hear the fuel pump prime at start-up?

RE: Fuel Pump Question
It's a 99 4dr 2wd. Normally I hear it prime and the truck starts immediately. This morning I heard no sound from the pump and it didn't start. I was just curious if the fuel system could hold enough pressure overnight to keep the pump from needing to prime. I was on my way to work so I didn't have time to do the pressure test. I'll give that a try when I get home today. I'll check the relay too. Thanks for the tip.

RE: Fuel Pump Question
you should probably hear something. Check the fuse, the relay, and your pressure before you drop the tank. I just recently changed a fuel pump. I could hear mine, but it was still bad. It was working but wasn't pushing enough pressure to fire the engine.

RE: Fuel Pump Question
What are we supposed to hear? My engine always cranks a couple seconds in the morning when cold and then starts, and the rest of the day just starts right up. So am I just not hearing it because I'm not thinking about it? I have never thought anything was wrong with the fuel pump, but I have a '91, and it has never been changed that I know of, and I think I have all the records. What should I be listening for, how loud should it be, and how concerned should I be if I don't think I can hear it?

RE: Fuel Pump Question
Kind of like a whinning sound coming from your fuel tank. Leave your door open and turn your radio down next time you start up. You'll hear the pump working. It's just the sound of an electric motor running.

RE: Fuel Pump Question
I swapped the f/p relay with the horn relay and the horn still worked but still no pump. I looked all over for for a fuse labeled "fuel pump" and could not locate one. On the 99 is it in the fuse panel on the side of the dash or in the big one out under the hood where the relay is?

RE: Fuel Pump Question
the fuse that provides power feed to the fuel pump is "ECM B" to the left of the fuel pump relay. (on a 2000 anyhow..)

RE: Fuel Pump Question
Yep, I was afraid of that. I thought that seemed like the logical choice so I checked it while I was out there. It was good. Guess the fuel pump is dead.
Thanks for the help everyone!
