vortec engine
anyone out there know about the early model vortec engines? is it mpfi or cpi? i have the vortec in my jimmy and i was wondering what it was. i was going to buy some aftermarket parts and i don't know if this is a rare engine they put in it or what. it says vortec in big letters at the top on the intake. also, if i have the 4.3 vortec and 4x4, would i have the electronic trans or the 700r4? were those 2 transmissions different options for different packages? just curious cause it shifts so sooth for 145K miles. thanks for the help

RE: vortec engine
I believe that Tim (Hanr3) posted a general history of the 'vortec' motor awhile back (but I could be mistaken on that one...). Anyway, your '93 is a CPI. The CPI injection uses 1 large injector in a central body which feeds 6 poppet valves in the intake ports. The injector is batch fired, meaning that when it fires, it feeds all cylinders the same amount of fuel at the same time.
As far as the transmission goes, I do not believe that you have the 4L60E, but I do think that it is the 4L60 (non-E - or non-Electronic). Both the 4L60 & 4L60E are just evolutions of the 700R4.

I have a 93 blazer with the vortec and it has the 4l60e. Look at your throttle hookup. 1 cable goes to the gas peddle the other cable goes to the cruise control. I don't think there's room for the kickdown cable even tho the bracket looks like there's a hole for one. Without a kickdown cable, you have the Electronic transmission.
There's a 95 Jimmy out in the yard at work and it has a vortec, with the 4l60E. I just replaced an engine in a 93 GMC sonoma (vortec), it has the 4l60E also. I did like the 2" body lift it had on it. Made it REAL easy to work on stuff underneath!

RE: vortec engine
All of the S10-Blazers came with 4.3L Vortec engines. Just the design changed over the years, and the current "best" version is from "96 and newer. Vortec is the way the heads are designed.
"93 is the first year for the 4L60E tranny in the S10-Blazer. The easiest way to check which tranny you have is by the passengers side. Crawl under and look up, if you see a electrical connector, its the 4L60E. If it has a black plastic sleeve that runs up into the engine compartment, its either a 700R4 or 4L60, basically the same thing.
