Default highflow cat vs my stock cat

I know this subject has been mentioned a couple times already, but asking the question a different way- Is it worth upgrading to a highflow cat even if the stock cat is working fine. Im looking to get a throatier tone from the exaust, while having a somewhat mellow rumble using a flowmaster 50 muffler. Currently, I have a CAI installed. Is the worth the money for a high flow cat or just keep the stock with setup I'm going with. Thanks.

What year are you running? I believe in the 2000 model year (could be wrong) they started using a cat and a precat. For the sound it will sound good if thats all you want, but do not expect a HP gain. IMO its worth it for $65 if you just want sound.

Hey Phil, thanks for the response. I'm running with a older 96 Blazer LS 4d. As far as I can see, it only has one cat on it, and ya I think I would pay $65 if the change in sound is significant enough over stock even if there isn't much an hp gain. I guess my next question would be what $65 cat would you be referring too? I believe someone else posted a thunderbolt one from ebay, and I heard some talk of a magnaflow high-flow cat. I only saw a universal one though.

I used this one on my 2000 Firebird with no code issues or anything like the sort: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-94106/ Definitely gave it a nice improved tone.

Looks like a good one, except for the fact that it says "not legal in California", but I really don't see me being stopped for this. My only concern would be if it would pass smog. Is this one considered hi-flow? I only saw the description as universal. Thanks for the input.

Thanks Phil, I was wanting to get back to the subject at hand- but I've been alittle busy. Wanted to ask you if going with the "carb" version of the magnaflow would make a difference vs stock, since I cant get the 49 state one? Thanks again.

Yeah, I called more then a few exhaust shops and most em say that "high-flow" cats are just a gimmick, and that basically I already have a "high-flow" cat with the stock one that I have. But, I did find that the California line of magnaflow cats flow the same as the 49 state ones. So, I think i'll save myself $250 parts and labor and just keep the stock.

Im with you on the pcm tune which will increase hp and should help with mpg. But I think my money will be better spent on just the pcm tune over the highflow cat. Actually the high-flow cat would be more expensive then the pcm tune. They quoted me $190 on the tune, and $250 parts and labor for the CA magnaflow cat.
