you are sucking hot air off the engine like that. hot air is worse than stock air.
the idea behind a COLD air intake is that you engine can squeeze more juice out if the air it takes in is denser, more oxygen per square atom, and such.
With out putting SOMETHING in there to seperate the filtered air from the engine comportment, you will continue to suffer. try something as stupid as a rubbermaid bathroom trash can. stick a k&n filter on it and now you're a bad ***

but it comes with a heat shield...

where? that little plate on top of the cone?
i saw no 'shield' other than that....
if thats it then see my previous 2 posts

That shield covers the top and the side that the engine is on. Is that not sufficient enough?

sorry guys. if it's more that what the picture shows, then it's a good deal.
if it's what the picture shows, i have already said why it doesn't mae sense.... look at the shield on the K&N it only needs a very small amount of modding to work 100%.
with the filter shielded on 25% of it's surface, you can set it to face the engine directly. it's better than naked, but doesn't seal out any hot air. it just makes it so the filter sucks hot air around the shield...
like i said, maybe i'm not seeing it, but it makes no sense to me

The term cold air intake is misleading as the under hood temp is not cooler air. The only improvement can come from flowing more air (less restrictive air filter). Having the air intake outside of the engine bay (behind the grill) could provide cooler air and increased velocity at higher speeds. Colder air is more dense and therefore has a higher O2 content and therefore more power. I have nothing against intake systems but they are mis-named. I would prefer an intake that funnels the air from behind the grill.

you could run pvc, flex tube, etc to "re-direct air" from all over the front to the filter. would be interesting to see if any gains came of it.

That eBay kit is like a 100% immitation of that kit (Spectre kit). Just to give a better idea of what the heat shield looks like. With that being said, is that still a lack luster heat shield? It covers over the top of the filter and curves to cover the side of the filter that the engine is on.

Man oh man, so far my decision has come to getting a K&N filter for higher flow and leaving it at that!
