the cutting I am not to sure of, iguess it would depend on how big of a unit you are installing. I did not have to cut anything when I installed my Alpine head. Now about the removal. Once it is completly free of all mounts you will need to snake the dash face trim off and arounf the dash, hazard switch and multi function switches. The best thing I have found is to lower the tilt wheel all the way down and turn on the hazards. this way the button is in its lowest position so you can snake the trim out. Good luck and just work slow so as not to crack any plastic .

with my 2004, i also had to lower the steering wheel down, take the 3 bolts out and pop the push pins to get it off. then i had to disconnect the hook ins (the rear hatch button, the headlight controls, and if you have it, the 4x4 switch). once those are disconnected it comes out and up to clear everything.
its not hard, you just have to be careful with it

Sounds like the right one. Does it say on the box that it will work in your truck?

i had to order an installation kit from crutchfield that would give me an extra 1" or so for my alpine head unit because it was to big. i also lowered the tilt and i also put the car in 1st gear. i had to wrestle with it but it eventually gave way

Yea the installation kit wasnt the right one and i got the radio hooked up but it didnt work so i reinstalled the factory radio and its not working and neithier is the overhead thing that tells you what direction your going or the tempature do you think i could have hooked the factory radio up worng or what?

sometimes you have to disconnect the battery when you're installing radios and such. any time i ever do electrical work in my truck i disconnect the battery as a safety thing. try disconnecting it, leave it off for like 20 minutes then reconnect and see what happens

My 96 does not have a tilt steering column, and I ended up breaking off the hazard switch, then searched on this forum to find the slick way to remove/replace it. ( The hazard switch assembly is about 3/4"x1/2" by about 2.5" long and slides into a rectangular 'socket' in the top of the steering column, they are about 13 dollars at the dealership ).
Either remove your hazard switch first ( takes 10 seconds ), or lower your tilt column, move your AT shifter and very carefully maneuver the bezel past the hazard button.
When I installed my Kenwood head unit, which was a lot deeper than a stock stereo, I needed an adapter that sticks out about an inch further than stock. I also cleared some of the plastic off behind the head unit, to make room for wiring.
