Just changed from a 95 with a drop tailgate to a 98 with the full hatchback.

In my 95 the cargo light-- that is, the interior light at the very back that lights the cargo area-- had a switch built into the ceiling next to the light that allowed me to turn on the light.

My 98 does not have this switch. Is the cargo light supposed to turn on automatically when the hatch is lifted? when the rear hatch window is lifted? Is this light supposed to come on when I turn my dome light on? the bulb looks fine, so I'm trying to figure out how to turn this rear light on?

Mod: After figuring out how this light is activated, I'm interested in changing from the no switch arrangement to the set up that had the switch, like my 95 did. The problem: In the 95 the cargo light was a 3 pin connector, in the 98 it's 2 pin. Why is this?

Thanks for the help. I'd really like to avoid hard-wiring the switched cargo light into place, but I will if I have to..

 

the three wire I would assume would have an alternate ground OR power so you could manually bypass the door jam switch
