Dash lighting

The dash lighting in my 88 gmc jimmy sierra classic is to dim even when the switch is turn to the highest brightest setting I think the bulbs are old and some are burned out what size bulb is it and I was wondering if I could put a halogen bulb in the dash but idk if the bulb would get to hot is this a good or bad idea so if I could get help or ideas that would be great thanks

Part of the issue with multiple threads is one you have demonstrated nicely.
Is your dash dim, or do the lights not come on at all?
