Hi all,

I have been having numerous electrical problems with my truck and i have a few questions I'm hoping to get some inout

When i bought my truck back in 2011 i had a weird electrical problems that are out lined in this video:

Anyway i have been reading up on posts that say to take out the underhood fuse box, well i did and in the process i broke a wire to the connector that controls the ABS and INT BAT fuses what circuits do these power other than the odvious ones, and could i just cut off the old connector and splice in a new one?
Also what could or should i use to clean up all the corrosion on the pins and inside all the connectors?

Ignition switch? they are known to do some REALLY weird things when they go bad.

 

i did that already i also tried a new headlight switch neither of which solved the issue i completly removed the under hood fuse block removing all relays and fuses.
the block is on my desk as we speak i had corrosion on the underside which made on wire breack inside the connector so i have to repair that i wll get pics up as soon as i can to show you what i mean

 

That is just crazy.. I honestly dont know what could cause this, but we will help you troubleshoot.

let me get someone in the thread that is half computer.

 

it will certainly be nice to get this ole girl back to factory condition. ha ha ha lol.
i need to point out that she isnt able to move very far as she is stuffed in what little patch of yard i have between an old clothes line pole and a 1972 dodge b series 1 ton motorhome

 

I can say, with the looks like it, its going to take quite a bit of work to get that back to normal. Electrical issues are not fun to deal with, and this certainly looks to have quite the problem.

I almost want to say, either deal with this problem how it is, or start digging, and digging deep.

What does uncovering the daylight sensor usually do?

 

If it were me, I would attempt to find a new (used) fuse box from a junkyard to get around the headache of cleaning the terminals in the box itself. You just have to make sure that it is from a similarly equipped truck. There are at least two fuse box layouts that I am aware of (base & up-level).

The terminals in the connectors... Well that is another story. There is no easy way of cleaning them properly. The corrosion can be removed by soaking them in a vinegar & salt solution. I have used THIS METHOD a few times and you have to clean things really well afterwords by rinsing with baking soda & water to neutralize the acid, blowing it dry, then soaking the entire connector in WD40 for a bit and blowing it dry again, but it works. This process will strip the terminals down to bear metal where the corrosion is present. Whatever original anti-corrosion plating was on the terminals will no longer be there so you will need to liberally coat the connector in dielectric grease to keep corrosion at bay for a while. It wouldn't hurt to reapply dielectric grease every few years or at least check on the condition in that time span.

If there are some terminals that are too far gone, replacement terminals can be purchased from just about anywhere. I recently had to do some repair work requiring 2.4mm terminals. I picked them up on Amazon.com for relatively cheap. I am not sure what size the terminals are for the fuse box, but I am fairly certain that you can find them for not a lot of money. Replacing the terminals will be a "fun" process in a masochistic way.

 

Thogert: If I uncover the headlight sensor it causes the whole instrument cluster, radio and all power functions to not operate properly. It also causes all power to be lost to the headlights as well. I know thats how its supposed to work for the h-lights but i cant even operate them in a manual position.
Swart: I had seen some corrosion found usually on battery posts i was curious if i could use somehing like a small of coca cola to just kind of knock it down a little and keep it well cleaned from now on? What i broke was the wire that runs to the connector that plugs in on the underside of the box that carries current for the ABS and INT BAT fuses.
i will work on getting some video of this tomorrow

 

i' d like to post an update here i did manage to fix the connector i broke and reassemble the fuse box i now have all of my interior lights back everything works as it is supposed too. Except for the fact that i cannot start it via the ignition. It does not ground the starter relay properly, i had modified the relay a while ago to start it by operating the relay by hand does any one have an idea as to where the fault might exist
