Default Ignition Question 1983 K5 blazer

Hi,
Please forgive my ignorance. I was troubleshooting an ignition problem on my blazer and I found the cause, but don't know what the part is actually. Is rests on the steering column and Ignition wires and wires from the fuse box go to it. Now here is the strange part...the part slides left and right on a track. If I push it to the left, the car will not start, if I push it to the right, BINGO the car starts. It is a white, kinda rectangle, 2 plugs, 2 wires each.

I am attaching a crude image. it is the lower item, with the purple and yellow wires.

You shouldn't be able to move the ignition switch. There should be a screw or bolt that fastens it to the steering column to keep it in place once it is adjusted to start properly. That likely is the only problem you have, the fact that it can move. Get a mechanics mirror & inspect up and around the ignition switch for a means of fastening the switch to the column, adjust it so the truck starts, then tighten it down.

that looks like the neutral saftey switch to me. the ignition switch itself should be on the top part of the column and have abou 10 wires going to it. that thing in the way back top of the column is the neutral saftey switch... at least i think thats what it is ive never had any problems or ever messed with any of them

The neutral safety switch keeps you from starting the vehicle in gear, it limits the start function to park and neutral.
