Default Ignition switch problem?

1997 ZR2. I am experiencing intermittent, occasional electrical shut downs followed by ABS and Air Bag lights coming on. Starter turns over but I don't always get dash indicators on the first or second turn of the key. The engine does eventually start and runs well. I'm new to the forum and my searches have guided me to the ingnition switch in the steering column as the possible culprit. Can anyone direct me to a vendor to purchase a new ignition switch (not the key switch)? Thanks.

I found that switch at my local parts store, It wasnt napa, autozone or advanced, so im not completely positive if they would have one. You can even purchase one off the internet. I had similar symptoms. My truck would never shut down, just no power to the tranny fuse, ABS and airbag light come on and then would turn off already after truck has been started, and a stuck key. Its around 100 bucks by the way.

i get most of my parts online now. I dont know if we can endorse websites or not. its a website that has the same meaning similar to stone-car . com

I believe youre on the right track when you suspect the ignition switch.

You can say rockauto.com! LOL

And yes, I agree with the previous assessments that the ignition switch is the most likely culprit.

Thanks for the clarification on web site endorsement. I work for the federal govt and sometimes I get work rules mixed up with personal rules. Have a great one!

Thanks to all for your replies! I plan to purchase an OEM AC Delco part online. It will save me about $40 over my mechanic's price to me. I appreciate all the input. It has been very helpful. I think this forum will be indispensable. JRT

The diy posts found in the Tech Article (DIY) section are for the '98+ trucks, but the process is similar. I believe that one of the discussion threads goes through the differences. Let us know if you have any questions along the way.
