Default low voltage

ive done some searching but havent really found much. got a 00 blazer 4.3. the volt meter reads at 9 at some days and other days it will read 14. i do got a system in it and even if i dont have it on it still reads 9. got the amps hooked up to a toggle switch so its not on all the time. ive done the batt pos to alt upgrade as well as batt neg to alt. still no change. ill try the neg to a ground tomorrow and see if that helps. could i have a bad battery alt or gauge?

It would not hurt to get your batt and alt tested at an auto parts store, most test for free. but I would first start with your ground to the battery, give it a good clean ground, and then go from there.
