Default Remote no workie workie

My remote has stopped working for my 96 Blazer and I don't know how to check to see if it is the problem or something on the truck is it. I put new batteries in the remote but it still didn't work. when the batteries go dead do you have to reprogram the thing? How can I test it, where or what receives the signal and where is it located? Sure would like to get this thing working as I want to install a remote starter system and alarm before the snow flies.
