Default tach is very pulsy?? hard to explain.

so i noticed after a while, mainly once it started getting cold that the tach on my 96 likes to jump around on me. like it is around the rpm that it is supposed to be at but it fluctuates a couple hundred rpm constantly. i know its not the engine doing that because the car would be jumping all over the place and the i can tell by just listening to the exhaust that the engine is working fine.

its not operating smoothly if anybody gets my drift. i have no idea what the problem would be, maybe a loose connection to the distributor if that is still where the tach wire comes from. but idk. somebody with good electrical background help me here please. i can definatly drive the truck in the mean time its just annoying when i have to look at my tach and i see this little thing spazing out.
