Default Chevy Astro Spontaneously explodes

I was sitting in the kitchen, watching Bull Run on the TV (awesome show, anyone else watch?) and I hear what sounds like a 12-gauge shot gun fire. I look out the window and I see a fire. I then realize it's our van on fire.

I have no idea what started it. My first impression was somebody lit it...like vandals. But the firemen say that water in the electrics (it was raining at the time) caused a short and lit it. I have never heard such a thing.

I'm still dizzy from shock as I post this right now. I have no idea what we're going to do...I guess contact insurance and go from there.

Just thought I would share, and what do you think? How do you think it caught on fire? I know there's a fireman on here somewhere lol

I've never heard of water causing a fire, but I guess if the water touches electricity, it could happen.

Sorry bout the loss, looks like the insurance will be buying someone a new vehicle!

my dad gets water on electronics in his semi all the time, when it happens on it the lights just flicker but never caught fire doesnt even cause it to run bad or anything.

I did see a mercury tracer catch fire in the middle of town one day after the older man driving it had pressure washed the engine. If the van hadnt been driven recently I'd say it had some bad wires and that water was the most likely culprit. Everything in the engine is wet, electricity is running thru the water heating up and eventually enough to catch something on fire.

So autos can't get wet? I'll be right back... I gotta move my cars into the garage!

Seriously though, sorry for the loss. We want to hear more if they determine the exact cause.

Yea, I'm very skeptical about the electronics theory, but what else would have caused it??? I see no reason for somebody to throw a pipe bomb at it...

I got some aftermath photos in daylight...

The insurance company is going to pick up the van tomorrow afternoon and tow it down to some investigator garage in Hollywood and pinpoint the exact cause of the fire.

sorry to hear about the loss, sounds like they are taking the appropriate actions though, it almost looks like you could fix it if it means that much, or take advantage of the opportunity

I can only assume the fireman pulled the hood up like that?
This is a long shot here, but, any chance the air bag blew off and the fire started as a result?

it looks like it was mostly contained by the firewall...i dont know how the airbag would cause a fire and jump the firewall? just my
