Spring loaded contacts and slip rings are "old school" technology. Clock springs are far more reliable.

Finally got this done, took about 2 1/2 hours and was more involved than the directions that I downloaded. Worst part was the intermediate shaft was rusted on the rack, but finally came off. Works great now.
